MAZDA Service Tips: How to Jump-Start Your Car Battery

March 11th, 2024 by

Even with routine maintenance, sometimes your Mazda car battery needs a jump-start. While this can be a frustrating experience for a car owner, it’s a common issue that’s easily fixed. And Bakersfield Mazda is here to help — here’s a look at how to jump-start your car battery.

How to Recognize if Your MAZDA Car Battery Needs a Jump-Start

There are a few ways to tell if your Mazda car battery needs a jump-start. Here are a few things that might happen when you try to start your engine:

  • The engine won’t turn over
  • The headlamps don’t turn on
  • Interior electrical components like the dashboard lights, dome light, and sound system don’t come on

Jump-Starting your MAZDA Car Battery

If your vehicle’s battery needs a jump-start, the first step is to check your user manual for instructions and safety tips. The next step is to call a friend, family member, or neighbor to bring their working vehicle over to give you a jump. If you have roadside assistance at your availability, they can help you even quicker. To jump-start your car:

  • Connect one red clamp of your jumper cables to the positive terminal on the working battery
  • Connect the other red clamp to the dead battery’s positive terminal
  • Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal of the working battery
  • Attach the final clamp to an unpainted part of your vehicle
  • Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes before attempting to start your car
  • Try to start your vehicle; if it turns over, keep it running for at least 15 minutes (including driving)
  • Disconnect the cables in the reverse order as you attached them

Although your battery will have enough power to run for a short while, be sure to schedule a service appointment with our dealership as soon as possible. You might need a replacement battery, starter, or alternator — and we can diagnose and fix the issue quickly.
